Given that it was senior night at Woodbridge Tuesday, it would have been fitting for a senior to step up when it mattered most.

That’s exactly what Kelli Robinson did for the Warriors.

Robinson hit a 3-pointer with 1:18 remaining to complete a 49-48 come-from-behind win over Northwood after trailing for the majority of the contest.

Woodbridge (15-7, 5-1) trailed the Timberwolves 31-24 at the half. Robinson’s shot, along with a late steal by the senior, sealed the deal for the Warriors, who now take sole-possession of first place in the Pacific Coast League over second place University.

Robinson scored 12 points in the game, all of them on 3-point baskets. Patricia Zhao led Woodbridge with 15 points.

Northwood (7-15, 0-6) was led by Kaitlyn Hsu, who scored 10 of her 19 points in the first quarter. Tiffaney Pi scored 13 points in the loss.

“They played really well,” Bangs said of Northwood. “They shot the ball really well, and we just had to hang in there as long as we could.”

The game was the second straight league contest decided by two points for the Warriors and their third league contest overall decided by that margin.

Having played in tight games, Bangs is reassured that his team is at least learning how to win the close one, even if it was against a team looking for its first PCL win.

“Every game is tough,” Bangs said. “We’re getting some experience. I think we’re a little bit smarter at the end of the game. We stay under control and keep our poise a little bit more.”

Woodbridge girls 2-0 in league play after topping CdM

Michael Katz/Staff Writer
Woodbridge girls basketball coach Eric Bangs said his team has trouble scoring 40 points at this point in the season.
Luckily, when the opponent only scores in the 30s, his squad tends to be in good shape.
The Warriors defeated Corona del Mar on Tuesday night, 48-37, in a Pacific Coast League matchup at Woodbridge.
Woodbridge (11-6, 2-0) is without three starters this season who were lost to knee injuries early. But the team has found ways to win regardless, a point that the coach is proud of.
“We beat a very good team,” Bangs said. “We're kind of a patchwork team, losing three starters this year with ACLs, but we're fighting as much as we can.”
The Warriors were led by senior guard Kelli Robinson's 11 points. Chipping in 10 points each were Bonnie Sarchet and Jillian Cizynski.
Corona del Mar had several players who were taller than the Warriors. Nonetheless, the team fought through to win its 13th consecutive Pacific Coast League contest. Woodbridge hasn't lost a league game since a loss to Irvine in 2012.
“We're outsized 4 to 6 inches inside, and the girls played hard,” Bangs said.
“(It's) not pretty sometimes, but (we) got the job done.”
